Press Freedom Briefings
We publish analysis of the new and emerging threats facing journalists and newsrooms, with practical advice on how to respond.
Read the briefings →Press freedom in the United States is under growing pressure. Journalists are facing legal and regulatory attacks, coordinated online abuse, increasing violence while reporting, and new restrictions on where and how they can do their work.
The Journalism Protection Initiative was founded in 2023 to give journalists and newsrooms practical guidance, tools and support so they can continue to work in this increasingly adversarial environment.
JPI is led by Joel Simon, a journalist, author and longtime press freedom advocate who ran the Committee to Protect Journalists for 15 years. He has negotiated with governments and world leaders on behalf of journalists and writes regularly on press freedom and global affairs, including for The New Yorker and Columbia Journalism Review. He is the author of four books, including The Infodemic, co-authored with Robert Mahoney.
JPI’s programming is led by Kate Parkinson, a former foreign correspondent and documentary producer who has reported from conflict zones including Syria, Iraq, Ukraine and Libya. She has spent the last decade turning that experience into practical support for journalists.
